Beyond being just a standard, IEC61850 represents the opportunity to redefine substation automation under a new paradigm in which standardisation extends not only to data exchanged by the devices that form part of the automation system, but also to include the description, definition and configuration information for these devices and for the substation. The possibility of developing tools genuinely oriented to substation design and not simply to the communication and/or configuration of the devices for specific manufacturers has come about.

IEC61850 does not impose changes on automation criteria, but provides the opportunity to reflect on the methods, forms and functions on which current substation protection and control rests. Additionally, the standard offers the means and tools to improve conventional functions and to develop other new functions that were impossible to achieve up to now.
